Spice of Life

Focusing on Senior Mental Wellness

Spice-of-Life-LogoNearly 1 in 5 Americans 65 or older experience symptoms of depression. While depression in not a normal part of aging, it is one of the most common emotional health conditions among older adults.

The Spice of Life program is designed to enhance the quality of life for adults 55+ through a coordinated community-based program model. The model prepares care coordinators and “gatekeepers” to identify needs and to facilitate access to community resources for resolution. It targets underserved, underdiagnosed older adults who live independently. Spice of Life ensures seniors receive the help they need to live active and healthy lives.

One of our major focuses is working with area resources to provide activities tailored to seniors. Our programs are showing results by helping seniors in our community find ways to share with their peers, provide services that are needed, or just socialize with people in similar situations to their own.

Additional Facts about Depression:

  • Depression is a medical illness that negatively affects how a person feels, the way they think, and how they act.
  • Depression is a common serious illness and not a personal weakness.
  • Depression can happen to anyone, at any age, and of anyone race or ethnic group.
  • Older adults with mental disorders are more likely to receive inappropriate or inadequate treatment compared to younger adults.

Our program, Healthy Ideas, is an evidence-based, self management program for depression. Building relationships to empower older adults to address depression and other basic care concerns are the fundamental goals of Healthy IDEAS.
